Gabe felt the moment Max returned to them, their severed bond knitting itself back together in his chest.

“Max?” Gabe held his breath as the feral light in Max’s eyes dispersed. Max blinked slowly, looking upon them in recognition. The world had stilled around them. The pond water had receded and lapped gently at the shore. The moon hid behind a blanket of clouds.

Max sat up and fell backward against his mother. “Ryan… Izzie? When did you guys get here?”

Izzie wiped her eyes. “Gabe called us, told us about the ritual. We wanted to be there for you.”

“Of course we came, man!” Ryan sniffed hard. “You’re pack, Max. I can feel you now!”

Ben grinned. “I can, too. It’s faint, but it’s a start. If we all spend more time together, those bonds will grow stronger and stronger.”

“I’m glad you guys are here.” Max breathed out, smiling a tired, beautiful smile.

Gabe looked all over Max’s body for signs of the wolf’s influence. There was no red fur. No lingering claws or fangs. His eyes were a beautiful honey orange. The bond between them glowed warm and bright, untainted by feral madness. Max was here, and he was here to stay. Gabe’s eyes burned, relief leaving him breathless, and he wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry.

“Damn it, Max, you made me cry!” Ryan choked, yanking Max and Kendra into a group hug. “Never pull that shit again, you hear?”

“Thank the goddess,” his mother gasped, enveloping him in her arms. “We thought you’d never come back.”

“I didn’t, either,” Max admitted, closing his eyes as his mother cradled his head to her chest.

Gabe couldn’t look away from him, drinking in the way his lashes rested against his freckled cheeks, and reached out to brush a leaf from his tousled red hair.

Izzie said, “The night’s still young. How about a run if you’re up for it?”

Max blinked sleepily and rubbed his eyes. The drowsiness there dispersed. “That sounds… Man. That sounds amazing.”

Ryan was already stripping. “Hell yeah! Let’s go!” He turned into a white wolf with black-tipped fur. With a howl, he took off splashing in the water. Laughing, Kendra undressed and shifted, and Izzie was seconds behind. The two wolves chased each other around the trees, and Ben’s big silver wolf followed. Gabe and Max undressed to prepare for the shift.

Gabe chuckled. He loved this rowdy pack. “Ready, Max?”

He could see the fear in Max’s eyes. “What if it isn’t enough?”

Gabe squeezed his shoulder. “It will be.”

Max exhaled, closing his eyes. “Okay, but if I go crazy, bite my butt.” The shift started, but it was slow. Max was uncertain, taking his time. His body rippled like he was underwater, fur sprouting and face elongating into a snout. Gabe smiled when he felt the tug in his head and heart whenever anyone else in the pack shifted. Max was doing everything right, using their bonds to stay in control when he shifted. Before he knew it, Max’s red wolf stood before him. He dropped into a playful bow and barked.
